Advice on a Long Distance Relationship

Long distance relationships are difficult and they should not be embarked upon by those who are not deeply committed to them from the outset. They require a great deal of work and commitment and some expense to make work well. Long distance relationships are difficult, but not impossible. here is some advice on a long distance relationship.

Perhaps the foremost piece of advice on a long distance relationship is to just not have one. If you have considered all the difficulties and challenges and you choose to engage on it anyway, then there are a few ideas that will help manage it.

Making sure you have some kind of regular interaction is very important. this used to be handled via telephone, but in this age of Skype, video-calls can be free. the frequency of your visits depends entirely on you, but make sure that you have a live and relaxed interaction on a regular basis. Even email or instant messaging is better than nothing.

While you are scheduling these interactions, you can find ways to do things together. Rent the same DVD and start it together in your distant homes, then stay on the phone (or Skype) together while you watch or read the same novel so you have something new to talk about. If you cannot spend real time together, this is a fun way to get virtual togetherness.

Of course, you also need to see each other in person. this is the most challenging piece of advice on a long distance relationship to manage. If your significant other lives two hundred miles away it is easier than if they live across the country or across the globe, but this is fundamental to keeping a long distance relationship alive. Plan holidays together, either in one another?s cities or rendezvous in a romantic locale like Vermont for the holidays or a springtime holiday in Paris. If you live close enough for it to be feasible, spend a weekend or two per month at one another?s homes.

You can?t spend all your time talking to each other, so sending letters is a nice way to show them you?re thinking about them. Now we are visiting the nineteenth century, but a handwritten letter is a splendid gift from the heart. a written letter takes more time and thought than an email or an instant message, and it be kept as a fond memento of a distant loved one. get yourself a good pen and some note cards, and kick it Bronte style. You can also send gifts to show you care.

On the flip side, you also need time apart. this may seem like a counter-intuitive piece of advice on a long distance relationship, but it is something that needs to be considered. often when people live apart, they end up dominating every moment of one another?s free time, and it is harder to ask for time apart because of the amount of work that goes into a simple visit. Be considerate of each other?s space and make sure that you allow for some down time.

A long distance relationship takes work. If it is the right relationship for you, it is worth the work, but be very cognicent of both your partner?s needs and your own needs and be scrupulous about meeting them. hopefully you found this advice on a long distance relationship helpful.
