Hugo Ch?vez Says the U.S. Maybe Gave Him Cancer | Indecision ...

Cigarettes, breathing, looking at the sun, sticking your head in a microwave, eating lead paint, etc. Add yet another item to the already long list of totally fun things that cause cancer: Ruling a South American country.

Venezuelan president Hugo Ch?vez recently insinuated that a plot by the U.S. could be behind?his and other political leader's?illnesses?

Chavez, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in June and had a baseball-sized tumor removed in Cuba, has called for a regional summit of leaders who have battled cancer including Brazilian President?Dilma Rousseff, her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Paraguay?s Fernando Lugo.

"I'm just sharing my thoughts, but it's very, very, very strange," Chavez said. "Evo take care of yourself, Correa, be careful, we just don?t know," he said, referring to Evo Morales and?Rafael Correa, the leaders of Bolivia and Ecuador.

The U.S. embassy in Caracas declined to comment on?Ch?vez's theories, seeing as how he also recently called President Obama a clown, said George W. Bush was the devil, and refers to his political enemies as "Imperial Yankees." Even though several of those theories may sound credible, there's no way our government is capable of giving specific leaders long-term diseases.

Or is there??After all, the U.S. did give Osama bin Laden that bullet-sized tumor.

Kinect sensor wants to guess astronauts' weight, tell them to hit the space gym

How do you weigh yourself when there's no gravity keeping you down? Well, you can calculate your mass by sitting on an oscillating spring and comparing its standing frequency to your riding frequency (NASA's current method), or you could rig up a Kinect sensor to tell you when you're getting fat. Carmelo Velardo, a Eurocom computer scientist in Alphes-Maritimes, France, is developing the latter option. Working with colleagues at the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for Human Space Robotics, Velardo paired the Kinect sensor's 3D modeling digs with a database of weight to body measurements of 28,000 people -- the resulting system can guess your weight with a 97 percent accuracy.

NASA scientist John Charles notes that while the rig works well on the ground, it might hit some snags in space. Microgravity can shift water around in an astronaut's body, changing their density and potentially throwing off the Kinect setup's readings. Still, Charles says the technique "appears feasible," and suggests pairing it with the existing weight measurement tools might "provide insights into changes in body density that might be illuminating." Velardo hopes to test the system in parabolic flight soon. If he succeeds, not even outer space will protect us from the shameful judgment of video game peripherals. Now if you'll excuse us, we have some squat-thrusts to get to.

Well, then, introductions are in order.

I just started this account in order to gather players for my RP: Ruyn: The Winds of Fate. It looks like some posting may be in order so I can send you people messages and whatnot. I look forward to getting to know most of you, and as for the rest, well, we'll see. :) I've been roleplaying for several years, and have been an aspiring writer for much longer. As well, I enjoy poetry, drawing, music, nature and anything science-fiction or fantasy-related.

A spitting incident sets off Israeli frustration with Jewish zealotry

The harassment of a schoolgirl by Beit Shemesh's ultra-Orthodox community has ignited mainstream Israelis' simmering frustrations with the religious community's growing influence.?

The harassment of an 8-year-old girl by ultra-Orthodox Jews in the Jerusalem suburb of Beit Shemesh is shaking Israel?s self image to the core, stirring nationwide outrage about escalating religious zealotry and creeping public?segregation of women.

For months, Na?ama Margolis and classmates at her school?endured insults and spitting by the neighborhood's strict Orthodox Jews ??known in Hebrew as "Haredi,'' or God fearing ? who complain that?they should dress more modestly. When their story was featured on a?weekend news magazine several days ago, it ignited already simmering?worry about efforts of the ultra-religious to exclude women in places?like public buses or the army.

"I think the whole country needs to wake up ? that it?s?not just a corner in Beit Shemesh,?? said Ailsa Coleman, a 42-year-old neighbor who?volunteered to escort Margolis's classmates outside the school and was also spat on. "It?s happening?everywhere."

In recent days there have been repeated clashes?between ultra-Orthodox protesters and police and attacks on news crews?in Beit Shemesh. Thousands of protesters gathered in the city with?signs reading "Segregation of Women is my Red Line?? and warning of?an Israeli theocracy.

The segregation reflects the Haredi minority's growing influence on?Israel's politics and economy. Civil rights?advocates and Beit Shemesh locals say that the government and law enforcement authorities have?turned a blind eye, even though the examples of exclusion proliferate.

They point to special arrangements for ultra-Orthodox?communities where women are relegated to the rear of the buses, have separate lines in eateries, and sit in health clinic waiting rooms that are divided by gender. There are also efforts to erase images of women?from public billboards.?Last week, a secular woman was heckled for riding in the front of one of the buses and pressured to move.

"This ties into whether we are democratic liberal state?that protects women?s rights, or whether we?re not going to be a?democracy in a future," said Einat Horovitz, a spokeswoman of the?Religious Action Center, an Israeli nonprofit which challenged the?bus segregation in Israel?s Supreme Court. "Politicians don?t?realize that being a democracy isn?t only about the rule of the?majority, its about protecting human rights and the rights of the?minority, and this has escaped our politicians."

In Beit Shemesh, prominent signs calling for modest dress and?excluding women from certain sidewalks near synagogues have been?tolerated for years in the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood near the elementary?school,?which happens to serve a less strict group of Orthodox Jews.?

Chelsea Vs. Fulham, 2011 Premier League: West London Derby Kicks Off Boxing Day Football

Chelsea and Fulham contest a West London Derby on Boxing Day, with the Blues the heavy favorites at Stamford Bridge.

Dec 26, 2011 - Andre Villas-Boas has a minor injury crisis on his hands, but Chelsea will still feel like favorites going into their West London Derby against Fulham on Boxing Day. Branislav Ivanovic and John Obi Mikel picked up injuries against Tottenham Hotspur that will keep them out on Monday, while Alex has been removed from the team and Michael Essien is still on the long-term injury list. David Luiz's fitness will be decided on Monday morning.

Against Tottenham, Chelsea played with Jose Bosingwa in the center of defense with Paulo Ferreira at right back. More like than that is a move from defensive midfield to central defense for Oriol Romeu, who spent some of his time at the position while playing for Barcelona B. This would likely mean a return to the starting XI for Frank Lampard, while Raul Meireles would play a deeper role.

Fulham were absolutely crushed by Manchester United in their last league match, and they were particularly exploited down the flanks. Moussa Dembele and Bryan Ruiz don't exactly do much defending when they're played as wingers, and Martin Jol will probably have to make a change to avoid being run over by Chelsea.

Chelsea vs. Fulham

Game Date/Time: Monday, Dec. 26, 8:00 a.m. ET, 1:00 p.m. local

Anglican archbishop: Bonds, trust broken in UK (AP)

LONDON ? The summer riots in Britain and the financial crisis have broken bonds and abused trust in British society, the Archbishop of Canterbury said in his Christmas Day sermon.

Archbishop Rowan Williams appealed to those congregated at Canterbury Cathedral on Sunday to learn lessons about "mutual obligation" from the events of the past year.

Citing the four days of U.K. riots and the current European debt crisis, the Archbishop said "the most pressing question" now facing Britain is "who and where we are as a society."

"Bonds have been broken, trust abused and lost," he said. "Whether it is an urban rioter mindlessly burning down a small shop that serves his community, or a speculator turning his back on the question of who bears the ultimate cost for his acquisitive adventures in the virtual reality of today's financial world, the picture is of atoms spinning apart in the dark."

Williams, leader of the world's Anglicans, also quoted from the Book of Common Prayer in his sermon to say that if offenses are against one's neighbors, one should be ready to make restitution.

Troops deploy to Afghanistan on Christmas

ATLANTA -- Christmas is a festive day at the USO at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but it's also a day with big dose of reality.

As the last troops are returning from Iraq, the troops at the USO on Christmas day are deploying for the active war zones of Afghanistan.

For them, the war is far from over, but they worry that the American public has put this war on the back burner.

"I think a lot of people have forgotten about Afghanistan," said Elizabeth Chen, U.S. Army, as?she returned from Iraq and Kuwait. "As soon as Iraq came up, all you heard [was] Iraq, Iraq, and Iraq."

"We still have people out there," she added. "It's sad. I wish people would pay just a little bit more attention. The fact that we have our brothers and sisters, wives and daughters, and so many others over there. It's kind of sad that we forget about that sometimes."

But the troops?on their way back to an active war show little emotion.

"Those feelings I just leave them alone," said Ron Pierre, U.S. Army.?"I have no choice but to go back. In order for me to provide for my family I have to do that."?

"It's my job," added Michael Sheehan, U.S. Army. "It's what I signed up to do. My family is very understanding and supportive. It's OK. It's a little intense at times, but I'm okay with it."

"You've got to do your job day by day," Seth Lapham, U.S. Army, said as he checked in at the USO for his flight to Afghanistan. "You don't really think too much of the harm. You just got to keep your head up and just keep alert and stay focused." "

To brighten the day, and take their minds off what was ahead, the USO went all out to make the deploying troops feel right at home.

A lavish buffet was prepared by Atlanta's leading volunteer chefs and served by a contingent of community volunteers.

And bringing big smiles were?Santa and his helpers. Santa was Jackson Bedford, a Fulton County Judge and former Navy pilot who served in Vietnam.

As Christmas day started winding down, the troops marched across the airport atrium to loud applause and cheers as they headed to their waiting aircraft for a return to an active war.

Kiip Rethinks Mobile Gaming Ads | Adweek

In April, startup Kiip announced a new advertising platform for mobile games, offering what it called "real-world rewards for virtual goods." Today CEO Brian Wong is announcing a new twist on the idea, called the Swarm, with Walt Disney Studios as the first advertiser.

In Kiip's existing program, as players beat levels in participating mobile games, they get offers for free products from advertisers like Dr Pepper and Best Buy. The brand gets positive exposure, while the publisher makes money and rewards its players. That model is already seeing some success (the startup says its ads have reached "millions of players with double-digit engagement rates across the network"), but Wong says its appeal is limited to consumer packaged-goods companies and retailers. Other categories, like automotive, entertainment and travel, are left out because "you can't give away a million cars," he says.

That's where the Swarm comes in. Instead of offering a reward to every player who reaches a certain milestone, advertisers and publishers can organize "flash tournaments" where players compete for big prizes during a limited period of time. To promote its upcoming science fiction film John Carter, Disney will be running a Swarm from Dec. 23 to Dec. 26, with 36 winners receiving prizes ranging from a 3-D TV with surround sound system to $10 snack credits at movie theaters.

There are more advertisers lined up for January, Wong says. And the new model will also be priced differently than existing Kiip ads, with Swarm advertisers paying for impressions rather than sign-ups.

Wong emphasizes that Swarm isn't supposed to replace Kiip's existing model but rather to help the startup reach a new set of advertisers. At the same time, some of his ideas have evolved. At first, he resisted the idea of posting a list of games running Kiip ads to avoid a situation where players download those games for the rewards alone. Now, Wong said, "The market has become used to this concept," and perhaps even more importantly, players have started to create their own Kiip game lists. So the company has created its own Spotlight page listing games, rewards and advertisers.

Donald Cerrone interview: After nasty exchange, he?s hell bent on ruining Nate Diaz?s holiday season

Donald Cerrone isn't very big on Christmas and definitely not a fan being insulted. After an October run-in with Nate Diaz, it makes for the perfect blizzard of punches, knees and kicks next week at UFC 14.

Before UFC 137, there was no history between Cerrone and Diaz, until the younger half of the infamous Diaz brothers pulled a trick from his bag of anger.

During the workouts before UFC 137, Diaz was speaking Leonard Garcia, one of Cerrone's teammates at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque.

"Leonard was over there talking with the dude, so I said 'oh, [expletive] I'll go over there.' They were laughing and joking around. I walked over and said 'what's up Nate, I'm 'Cowboy.' He slapped my hand away and called me a punk-ass [expletive]," Cerrone told ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas (NSFW). "He told me to get on. I don't know what his point [was]. I guess he doesn't want to be cordial."

Cerrone is slightly volatile and likes to fight. You need some major cojones to start something with him. There was a brief second there something bad was set to go down.

"I was getting ready to fight. Then he walked away. He just took off after that. It caught me by surprise," said Cerrone. "Don't know anything about the guy. I think they just wake up pissed off all the time for no reason. It just seems like they're always mad. Whatever he does to get his mind ready for the fight that must be it," said Cerrone.

If you think Cerrone is going to let it slide, you're dead wrong. He brought it even stronger during an interview on "Countdown to UFC 141" saying Diaz messed with the wrong guy.

"If you want to talk [expletive] to me, you're just gonna enrage me and piss me off," said Cerrone. "So feed my [expletive] flame. That's what I say. Let's go!"

At Cerrone's last fight, a dominant win over Denis Siver at UFC 137, he again got to witness the Diaz brothers' madness first hand as Nick ranted and raved about everything under the sun.

"I was exploding into laughter on some of the comments. I was waiting for someone to take the mic away from him, like 'that's enough before you completely ruin yourself. That'll be enough out of you.' I was just surprised he kept going on about compensation and no one knew what the [expletive] he was talking about," said Cerrone.

As far as Christmas goes, Cerrone is planning on hitting the road in the morning to drive from Albuquerque to Las Vegas. Cerrone, who's picked up $225,000 in post-fight bonuses this year, bought himself an early Christmas gift, an $80,000 RV.

Africa: Obama Better for Africa in Second Term?

African Arguments (London)

Richard Dowden

21 December 2011

analysis

Despite his African heritage Barack Obama appears to have done little for his father's continent in his first term as US president.

He could not match George Bush's generous legacy of millions of dollars poured in into health in Africa. Besides, he could not be seen to be worrying about such a remote and ostensibly inconsequential continent (for Americans, anyway) while the US was under threat from Islamic militants and its economy was shedding jobs.

All US presidents, and uniquely this one (given his unconventional background) have to prove themselves to the American people in their first term. In his case Obama had to prove that he was not some liberal pacifist wimp of foreign parentage who couldn't use military might to punish America's enemies. He had to 'win' the war in Iraq, track down Bin Laden and kill him and send drones over Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia to kill terrorists. That, by the way, may be a war crime under international law.

He also expended a huge amount of political capital getting his health scheme through Congress. It is still to be implemented. He has however been able to do little about America's declining economy and the subsequent decline in political power in the world. As campaigning gets under way for next November's election we will, I suspect, see little of the compassionate, intellectual man and more of warrior Obama.

If he wins a second term things will be different. He doesn't need to get re-elected. Consequently we may see Obama trying to straighten out Africa's bad politics. I am told he is ready for it. Contrary to appearances, he has remained quietly engaged with Africa throughout his first term, constantly phoning presidents and others - especially the Kenyans when there is tension. He has also had many of the Big Men to Washington for state visits. But it has been low profile.

The paradox of Africa at the moment is that, at last, it is where the hot money is going. Trade is booming and Africa's economies are among the fastest growing on the planet. But the politics are as bad as ever and next year several countries, Kenya included, are facing elections which may spark violence and war. At this moment of economic opportunity there remains the great threat of disruption, and a dearth of leadership to guide countries around it or through it. There is no one like Olusegun Obasanjo, Thabo Mbeki or Nelson Mandela who could provide a continent-wide vision and summon other rulers to help deal with crises. The traditional Big Men - the South Africans and Nigerians - are inward looking, their leaders not confident of making the right calls and giving decisive leadership. They backed different horses in Cote d'Ivoire and, like almost all African governments, kept quiet about Libya.

So there is a role for Obama in his second term, maybe not too prominent, but as a consensus builder. US interests outside West African oil are almost purely concentrated on making Africa successful and secure. Future generations may wonder how on earth China managed to get every one of Africa's rulers to come and shake hands with the Chinese president and premier in 2006 while the United States never even bothered to invite them. If the US is going to continue to be sole or joint Top Nation, it surely needs a substantial engagement in Africa beyond aid money and fighting terrorism. Obama could provide that.

Cyprus' FM briefs US officials on gas development (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The foreign minister of Cyprus is discussing with U.S. officials her country's promising economic prospects from natural gas exploration.

Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis met with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday. The U.S. supports the exploratory drilling being conducted by the U.S. company Noble Energy Inc. despite objections from U.S. ally Turkey.

Turkey does not recognize Cyprus as a sovereign state and opposes any Greek Cypriot energy search on grounds that it undermines the rights of Turkish Cypriots to any oil and gas wealth.

Estimates are due this month of how much gas is in the field being explored off the island's coast. Kozakou-Marcoullis said she believes the prospects for gas development already have increased dramatically her country's strategic importance.

(AP) ? American teenager Lexi Thompson has made history as the youngest winner on both the LPGA and Ladies European Tours.

The 16-year-old Thompson shot a 5-under 67 Saturday to win the Dubai Ladies Masters, becoming the youngest professional winner on that side of the Atlantic.

Thompson pulled away from Lee-Anne Pace of South Africa to win by four strokes for her second professional victory. In September, she became the youngest winner of an LPGA tournament at the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama.

"It feels amazing," Thompson said. "I'm just honored they invited me back and I'm just grateful to be here. I've been working on my game really hard and it has paid off."

Thompson chipped in for a birdie on No. 9 to take a one-shot lead over Pace and extended her lead with four birdies on the back nine for a 15-under 273 total.

Pace (69) started strong with two birdies and an eagle on her first six holes, but shaky putting on the back nine ended her chances.

The 2010 European Tour money winner, Pace hit her approach shot on No. 12 over the green for her second bogey in five holes.

"Things could have been a little different," Pace said. "I hit a bad club on 12, which cost me a shot, and that is where things changed around."

Sophie Gustafson of Sweden (71) was a shot behind Pace in third place followed by four players another shot back.

Michelle Wie (72) came into the final round five shots behind leader Thompson. She fell out of contention with two bogeys and a double-bogey on the front nine, finishing tied for 12th.

"It was pretty frustrating. I couldn't get my putts going," Wie said. "I just needed to play better on the front nine all week. Nothing really went. Nothing went in. At least, I finished birdie, birdie. I gotta work on a lot of things for next season."

Thompson's father Scott, who caddies for her, said he was most impressed how she handled the pressure when Pace made her run.

"She didn't panic and kept playing her game, not worrying about what else anyone was doing," he said.

Wie offered a congratulatory tweet and predicted she would be force to reckon with in the future. The 22-year-old Wie praised the support Thompson gets not only from her father but her entire entourage.

"I think she kind of has that mentality, just grip it and rip it," said Wie, who also joined the LPGA Tour at 16 and has two wins. "She just goes out there and just kind of has fun, which is really nice to see. She's a really talented player and I'm really impressed."

Thompson is projected to move into the top 40 in the rankings. She credits her success with playing alongside her brothers, including PGA Tour member Nicholas.

The precocious Floridian qualified for the U.S. Women's Open at age 12 in 2007 at Pine Needles, tied for 10th at the tournament last year and was a runner-up by one shot last year at the Evian Masters, one of the richest events on the LPGA Tour schedule.

Her breakout moment came in September when she won the Navistar LPGA Classic by five strokes and was granted LPGA membership two weeks later.

The unfailingly polite, easy-going Thompson said she was looking forward to spending some time with friends and steadily improving next season.

"There's not really any pressure," she said. "I'm just playing the game and doing what I love. Playing every week in these tournaments is an honor for me, so I'm just coming out and relaxing and doing my best."

Her father also tried to tamp down expectations, saying he just wanted to relish her second victory since she turned pro a year-and-a-half ago.

"The first one wasn't a fluke. She has won again now. That is the great thing," he said. "The first one people may say she is lucky for the week. But she won again, so it kind of validates it."

Review: Samsung's Galaxy Nexus a sweet smartphone (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? As fans of Google's Android mobile software well know, each new version is named after a sugary treat, such as Gingerbread or Honeycomb. Android is about to get even sweeter with Ice Cream Sandwich ? a smooth, feature-rich operating system that will run first on the delectable Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

The combination of Google's software and Samsung's hardware makes the Galaxy Nexus one of the best candidates to compete with Apple's latest iPhone, though its price is steep. It will be available Thursday in the U.S. for $299 with a two-year Verizon Wireless contract.

Like the previous phone in the Nexus line, the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus was jointly developed by Google Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. It features a slim frame with a large, curved glass screen that's comfortable for chatting with friends and excellent for watching videos. There are 32 gigabytes of built-in storage space on the Verizon version of the phone, but no external slot for a microSD memory card.

The screen, a pocket-busting 4.65 inches at the diagonal, makes the iPhone's 3.5-inches look diminutive. And despite the size, the Galaxy Nexus manages to weigh just 4.8 ounces, slightly less than Apple's offering.

On it, videos and Web pages looked crisp and bright, with rich colors. I started watching a video during testing ? an HD copy of "The Help" that I rented from Google's Android Market ? and had to force myself to break away to test other features of the device.

With the latest version of Android under the hood, the Galaxy Nexus is packed with new and improved features. Many of them are great; others are simply great in theory.

Overall, the software looks fresher and less cluttered. The virtual "buttons" that usually sit at the bottom of the screen have been redesigned. There's still a "home" and a "back" button, but no "menu" button to pull up various options within an app. Instead, there's now a "recent apps" button that shows what you've been doing lately on the phone.

Another neat change: The buttons are completely virtual, so they change directions when you flip the phone sideways and disappear when you're viewing photos or videos.

Other changes to Android include an overhaul of its virtual keyboard, meant to make it easier to type without messing up ? something I've always had trouble with on the stock Android keyboard. I was often able to type more accurately than in the past, but sometimes still ended up with unintended words in my messages.

The Android browser and Gmail are updated, too. Gmail's new functions include the ability to search emails while offline, while the browser is zippier and has a "request desktop" option so you can check out webpages in their non-truncated desktop version.

One new feature that falls into the "great in theory" category is Face Unlock, which uses facial-recognition technology to unlock the phone from standby mode. To set it up, you take a picture of your face with the phone. Then, all you have to do to unlock the phone is stare at the screen after you press the power button.

Most of the time it didn't work, though, probably because the phone couldn't recognize my face from certain angles. I was also able to fool it by holding up a shot of my face on an iPhone. So much for security.

Ice Cream Sandwich also has Android Beam, which lets you share such content as a Web page, map or video between two Android phones by bringing the backs of the phones close together. It only works with phones that have this Android software and near-field communication technology, though, so unless you and your friend both buy the Galaxy Nexus you'll be out of luck at launch.

More immediately useful was the phone's 5-megapixel camera, which is the snappiest I've seen on any Android phone. There was almost no shutter lag between shots, even when I had just turned the camera on.

Still, I would have preferred a higher-resolution sensor ? 8-megapixel cameras are quickly becoming common on smartphones. In addition, photos I took could have been brighter, though this can be improved on somewhat by using some of the available editing options, including numerous color filters and adjustable contrast options.

Like the iPhone 4S and some other high-end smartphones, the Galaxy Nexus can record high-definition videos in 1080p ? the best resolution you can get on a consumer camera. I had some fun taking sunset videos with a time-lapse feature, and there are some goofy filming effects to play around with, too.

And yes, you can make calls on the Galaxy Nexus. Its thin body and curved screen make it comfortable to hold against your ear, and calls generally sounded good.

Sadly, high-speed networks guzzle battery power like a milkshake, so I wasn't able to spend a ton of time using the device on a single battery charge.

The phone Google loaned me to test was a version that works with AT&T or T-Mobile, so I couldn't test its speed or battery life with the carrier actually selling it in the U.S., Verizon, or with its high-speed 4G network.

Using both T-Mobile's standard 3G and speedier HSPA+ networks, at least, I got about three hours and 15 minutes out of the Galaxy Nexus for surfing the Web, streaming a movie, sending instant messages, chatting on the phone and other activities. The phone got quite warm with all this use. Over Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network, it's possible that the phone's battery would drain even faster if you're doing a lot of downloading.

Another bummer: Verizon is blocking the Galaxy Nexus from supporting Google Wallet, which is supposed to allow the phone to be used to buy items in some stores by tapping it to payment terminals.

Generally, though, the Galaxy Nexus is a well-rounded smartphone that serves up a noticeably freshened-up version of Android with sleek hardware. Delicious, indeed.

Another Palestinian mosque torched in West Bank (AP)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? Vandals set fire to another mosque in the West Bank on Thursday and defaced it with Hebrew graffiti. Suspicion fell on Jewish extremists widely assumed to be behind stepped-up violence against Palestinians and the Israeli military.

The governor of Ramallah, Laila Ghanam, said arsonists doused the mosque in the village of Burqa with gasoline, then set it afire.

The Hebrew words for "war" and "Mitzpe Yitzhar" were painted in red on a wall, and the Israeli military said carpets and chairs were burned.

Mitzpe Yitzhar is an unauthorized Jewish settlement outpost in the West Bank where Israeli security forces demolished two structures early Thursday.

In recent years, settlers have attacked Palestinian and Israeli military targets in retaliation for Israeli government operations they see as overly sympathetic to Palestinians.

The increasing frequency of the attacks, the sparse number of arrests and paucity of indictments have generated allegations that the Israeli government isn't acting forcefully enough against extremists after two years of violence.

On Wednesday, following an assault on an Israeli military base, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved measures to clamp down on extremists, including giving soldiers the authority to make arrests and to ban extremists from contentious areas.

(This version CORRECTS translation of graffiti in paragraph 3.)

Longform?s Guide to the Best Sportswriting of 2011

Michael J. Mooney ? GQ ? July 2011

On a high school hoops impostor:

?At Nimitz, Jerry never asked for a handout, which, of course, made people all the more willing to help. That summer, when school let out, some of the coaches recommended him for a job in the concession stand at the public pool. Melvon Anders supervised him. Jerry was popular with the teenage girls, a good employee?never late, never snapped at anyone, never had any money missing from his register. One dry-roasted day in August, someone asked him about his home, and Jerry pulled up Google maps on an iPhone. He showed a group, Anders included, a mountain in Haiti where he grew up. He said that most of his life was spent herding goats. They all listened dumbstruck. Goats? A hut on a mountainside? ?Who were we to question his story,? Anders says. ?He was the first Haitian most of us had ever met.?"

Occupy DC Wins Legal Victory On Camping In McPherson Square

WASHINGTON -- Occupy DC has won a major legal victory vindicating the right to protest in McPherson Square, where demonstrators have lived in tents since Oct. 1 despite federal regulations prohibiting camping in the park.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ordered that, absent "exigent circumstances," protesters must be given 24-hour notice if the government "intends to enforce its regulations prohibiting camping or sleeping in McPherson Square."

"We're very pleased that we got what we were asking for," said Jeffrey Light, the lawyer who secured this order for the protesters. "It's tough living in a tent city with the understanding that the Park Police might come in at any moment and shut it down. Now we know they're not going to do anything without a court hearing."

National Park Service spokeswoman Carol Johnson previously told The Huffington Post that the agency is using its ample discretion in allowing protesters to occupy McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza with tents and other structures that appear to be disallowed under applicable law. Some protesters maintain that the agency's beneficence isn't necessary and argue that their Occupy activities, including camping in the parks, are all protected by the First Amendment.

These divergent arguments will be resolved. While Judge Boasberg's order came in response to a request for a temporary restraining order against the government, Light said that Occupy DC protesters in the same case will soon file a motion for a permanent injunction on the ground that the camping restrictions are unconstitutional.

That motion is due no later than Jan. 3. A hearing before Boasberg has been set for Jan. 31.

Greetings!

Hey everyone! The name's Chloe1804, which is my real name, so you all can call me Chloe (Or Clo).

I randomly found this when looking for a RolePlaying website after the other one I was on mysteriously vanished overnight... (I had nothing to do with it, I swear!) So, here I now am!

I've been RolePlaying for awhile now (2 years), but I'm not very good as I don't have much time to RP these days, but I still like it so I'm always gonna RP. I was origionally on RPGuild (Can't find it now!) and I RPed in tons of Anime/Manga, Pok?mon RPs with my OC, Alicia.

I came here, to basically solve my boredom! These days, when I have nothing to do, I literly have nothing to do, so I want something to do, if y'all understand. When I'm not playing music, playing Hockey, Programming or reading, I'll be here, so... You all better get used to me! I also came here to improve my RPing skills, along with my short story writing skills.

I like Fantasy, Anime/Manga, Video Game RPs, especially ones with lots of action and adventure, and mysteriousness. I'm ok with ones involving romance, but they're not my fort? as such, so I prefer not to do them. But sometimes I will.

As I said before, I'm a very busy individual. I play the clarinet, I play Hockey in goals, I go to school and get good grades, I get along well with little children (I wonder if this is a reflection of my true self?), I like sleeping and I like hiding on people and scaring them. Scaring people is my current hobby, and I'm pretty good at it, and being creppy in general, cue evil laugh.

I'm very good at running away from things and hiding, and scaring things. I also like creeping people out, because it's funny to see the looks on their faces when I do it. I also like making random YouTube videos (I currently have one of a gummy bear planking!)

I have no friends here, and as such, am a very sad individual. Insert sad smiley...... Now. :(

And for reading this long, boring and creepy introduction, please enjoy these cakes, cookies, muffins and such.

Thank you, and good night!
