First, it helped me perceive and be grateful for how Disney proceeds to deliver the most eminent quality merchandise and services year-in and year-out. I read a couple of great books by Disney-outsiders (?Built to Last? by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras, and ?The Disney Way? by Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson) regarding how and why they were so impressed with Disney. I wanted to read a book in regards to a Disney-insider?s perspectives on what Disney does to impress everyone and exceed all expectations. This book showed me the ?what? of Disney?s practical magic of client service: a full-time business of shared values, imposed standards, concentered work, self-discipline, and attention to detail that is nearly transparent to all Disney guests. Libyan rebels are only a couple of miles from the center of Sirte, where Qaddafi loyalists are putting up a fierce fight to protect one of their last two holdouts. Civilians are trapped in the city.

Libyan rebels are closing in on Muammar Qaddafi's hometown of Sirte, one of two remaining Qaddafi loyalists strongholds. On Tuesday morning rebels reportedly captured the town's port and have overrun all but the center of the town.
Taking Sirte would be a huge boost to the National Transitional Council (NTC), the interim government, which is struggling to unite the country's tribes and regions. So long as Mr. Qaddafi remains at large, he can still destabilize the region, interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jabril told the United Nations Security Council today.
Rebels last week took all but a few last pockets of the southern desert town of Sabha, cutting off a key Qaddafi escape route and leaving only Sirte and Bani Walid to be captured, McClatchy reported.
But the end of the fight raises delicate questions about how best to protect Libya's civilians, while finishing off the Qaddafi regime. Rebels say they have advanced slowly on Sirte to allow civilians time to flee, meanwhile many have been cut off from UN aid, and some report mistreatment at the hands of Qaddafi loyalists.
Mr. Jabril has requested that the NATO air campaign continue as long as civilians are still being killed, Reuters reports.
Sirte is located on the Mediterranean coast between Misrata and Benghazi (see map). Snipers are holding up the rebel fighters' advances into the city from the east and west. Those coming from the east have been halted 1.5 miles from the city center for two days, BBC reports.
Rebel forces told The Wall Street Journal that if it wasn't for their effort to let as many civilians flee as possible before overrunning the city, they would have already captured Sirte.
Civilians have been fleeing Sirte in recent days, but have faced strong suspicion from rebels they encounter on the roads out of the city, The Wall Street Journal reports. On the exit roads to the west, rebel fighters distributed food and water to the fleeing families, but also pulled "suspected loyalists" from the vehicles.
"We're going to punish even those that supported Moammar with words," said a bearded fighter to a man who protested his detention. "We are the knights that liberated Libya."
Many civilians also said they had to sneak out of the city on "rural back roads" after Qaddafi loyalists in the town center tried to block them from leaving Sirte.
Reuters reports that some who fled Sirte say that Qaddafi loyalist fighters have tried to prevent the escape of civilians in order to use them as human shields.
Civilians trapped inside Sirte are facing food, water, and medical supply shortages, Reuters reports. The UN and other humanitarian organizations have been unable to get into the town to deliver supplies. Reports of the shortages come from civilians fleeing ? about 1,700 so far, according to UN aid coordinator Panos Moumtzis.
NATO vows it is working to protect civilians in Sirte and elsewhere in Libya as it continues its aerial assaults, in and around Sirte, on Bali Walid (see map), and the areas around the desert town. Mr. Moumtzis said that about 24,000 people ? a quarter of the population ? have so far fled Bani Walid, mostly to the south. But some have gone to Tripoli, where the humanitarian situation has drastically improved since the rebels took the city.
The availability of supplies is not the issue, Moumtzis said ? it is getting supplies to the embattled areas.
A doctor working in a Sirte hospital told the Associated Press that many of the injured brought to the hospital had been hurt by shelling from rebel forces outside the city. "Forces on the city's outskirts fire tank shells, Grad rockets and mortar rounds toward the city daily with little more than a general idea of what they are targeting," according to the AP.
CHICAGO (Reuters) ? Starting this week at Nash Elementary on Chicago's west side, students are getting up to 23 minutes more of math and 27 minutes more of language arts.
At Disney II Elementary on the north side, children have more time for special classes, so the music teacher is now there all day.
These are two of 13 Chicago public schools that are early adopters of a plan to add 90 minutes to the school day by next year, a change pushed by new Mayor Rahm Emanuel who says it is necessary to improve education.
But the way Emanuel's administration has pushed the plan has rankled the Chicago Teachers Union, which has already seen his new school board vote to rescind an annual 4 percent teacher raise.
The controversy, one of many between government bodies and teachers' unions around the country, promises to lead to testy contract talks in 2012.
"We have a real problem with the way this is being done," CTU President Karen Lewis said. "Rahm Emanuel is not the mayor -- he's the emperor."
Emanuel has said that Chicago Public School students spend 15 percent less time in the classroom than the average American public school student. The union, however, has questioned how the city counts the time, noting that Chicago schools have more instructional time than those in New York or Los Angeles.
To get schools signed on early, Emanuel offered a cash bonus of $150,000 each, plus a bonus for teachers of about $1,250. The union saw this as a strong-arm tactic, Lewis said. It sued the school board for unfair labor practices before the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board.
Lewis said the union knew the longer day was coming, but wanted it planned appropriately, and wanted teachers fairly compensated.
"Are we going to have more mind-numbing test prep?" Lewis asked. "We want to make sure our kids (get) 90 minutes more of broad, rich, deep curriculum."
Chicago schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard said early adopters could help illustrate what issues need to be addressed when the longer day goes systemwide next September.
CHANCE TO CATCH THEIR BREATH
Educator Deborah Meier, a senior scholar at New York University, said teachers did not need more time in front of classrooms -- they needed time for professional collaboration and for their own families. She noted that teachers already spend hours on preparation and grading.
"The motives of this sound to me like it's partly to weaken the union," said Meier, who has spent 50 years in schools as both a teacher and a principal.
Barbara Radner, director of the center of urban education at DePaul University, said both sides needed to collaborate on a longer and a better day.
Radner, who has unofficially consulted with schools on the longer day, said the new schedule would allow teachers to have a 45-minute lunch in the middle of the day, rather than at the end, and would open up time for recess.
"They put that break in the middle of the day so teachers have a chance to catch their breath, talk to each other and get ready for the afternoon," Radner said. "We have restored civility to the school."
CPS spokeswoman Becky Carroll, asked why CPS was offering incentives for early adopters, said: "If you're sick and you know in a year there's going to be medicine to help you, why wait?"
Is the medicine effective? A review of research on the longer day suggests that extending school time can help students learn, particularly at-risk students, but research designs were weak, so it was hard to tell what was helping.
"It seems likely that there's a small positive effect in extending time, particularly for particular groups," said Erika Patall, assistant professor in education psychology at University of Texas at Austin and one of the authors of the review. "It's possible that there's no effect."
Brizard said he knew a longer day alone was not a panacea, but that it would provide teachers extra tools, like more time for literacy and art.
"We just really would like to see our students not only performing strongly in the core academic areas, we would like to have students become strong artists, performers," said Bogdana Chkoumbova, principal at Disney.

(Reuters) ? Fox Sports, a division of News Corp, sued the Los Angeles Dodgers late on Tuesday to stop the proposed sale of television rights that is key to the baseball team emerging from bankruptcy protection.
In a filing with a bankruptcy court in Delaware, Fox Sports, said any steps taken by the team to sell media rights is in violation of its current broadcast agreement with Fox.
Earlier this month, the Dodgers proposed an auction of the right to broadcast the baseball team's games for bringing in billions of dollars to stabilize its finances and end bankruptcy.
The auction that the team proposed required the Dodgers to break its current broadcast agreement with Fox. That contract grants Fox exclusive negotiating rights till November 2012.
Fox's lawsuit also alleges that the team is already in breach of contract by sharing confidential information about the agreement "even after direct and explicit warnings."
The team blamed its June bankruptcy on the game's commissioner Bud Selig's refusal to approve a proposed $3 billion, 17-year media rights deal with Fox.

Spitfire 75th Anniversary When the Goodwood Motor Circuit opened in 1948, it used the perimeter road of what was RAF Westhampnett during World War II. Little has changed since and Goodwood is still an active airfield. Accordingly airplanes have always formed an intricate part of the Revival meetings with spectacular demonstration flights and an aeronautical concours d'elegance on the ground.
This year the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the iconic Spitfire was celebrated at what was once a Spitfire base. The R.J. Mitchell-designed fighter proved instrumental in the defense of the nation during in the Battle of Britain and in various guises, it was used extensively throughout the War. With its easily recognizable elliptically shaped wings and howling Rolls-Royce engine, the Spitfire is still a crowd favorite.

President Barack Obama announced Friday he is changing most of former President George W. Bush's "No Child Left Behind" law. NCLB moved education from district and state control to the federal level. NCLB was written to increase proficiency in math and reading. Few would argue that those are worthy goals. However, the application of NCLB had many unforeseen and negative consequences.
NCLB links funding to measures over which teachers have little control
No Child Left Behind was designed to bring poorer schools up to par with better-performing school districts. To level the educational playing field, the NCLB act created a series of high-stakes proficiency tests. In high-stakes testing, schools are awarded funding based on student proficiency. Educators can teach content, but they can't make students learn. It's like paying a dentist based on how well his patients brush their teeth.
High stakes tests are limited measures of achievement
Students demonstrate progress in tangible and intangible ways. Testing only measures ability to choose a correct answer in artificial circumstances. Tests can be subjective, biased and confusing. Tests say nothing about how students apply knowledge. Some students struggle with traditional testing. Test grades give a one-dimensional, distorted view of student achievement.
NCLB does not encourage good teaching, it deters it
By testing all students on one federally-mandated test, NCLB was supposed to reveal which teachers weren't doing their jobs. It was reasoned that students with low test scores weren't being taught properly. Good teachers, by NCLB's definition, are those who only teach to the test. Preparing students to succeed on one isolated measure leaves teachers with little time to address the plethora of other educational issues. NCLB reduces teachers to pencil pushers.
NCLB does not weed out bad teachers, it rewards them
A test isn't the only measure of student achievement and it's not the only measure of teacher accountability. Sometimes, teachers whose students get high test scores on one test, have learned to beat the system. It says very little about their overall teaching ability, except that they can play the game.
NCLB's one-size-fits-all fits no one
NCLB does not reward schools that are already doing well, either. Because schools are all compared on the same measure, successful schools must pick up the slack from lower performing schools. Setting content standards to fit all schools reduces it to the lowest common denominator.
NCLB forced schools into contrived contests against each other for tax dollars
Competition may be a good business model, but it is a poor educational model. Schools are not like local restaurants, each vying for consumer dollars. School districts are service units, each responsible for a different population. Each has its own jurisdiction. It's like pitting fire departments against each other.
Competition and collaboration cannot exist in the same organizational model
Schools work when everyone works together, not against, each other. When education becomes a contest with, tax dollars as the prize money, it turns schools against each other. Campaigning, undermining, one-upmanship, unsportsmanlike behavior and cheating occur.
NCLB does not level the playing field as intended
Not surprisingly, NCLB showed that students in poorer school districts did not test as well. With less funding, fewer resources are available. NCLB widens the gap instead of closing it.
About NCLB changes, President Obama said, "This does not mean that states will be able to lower their standards or escape accountability. If states want more flexibility, they're going to have to set higher standards, more honest standards that prove they're serious about meeting them."

NASA is working on a new communications system that could dramatically cut the time needed to transmit high-resolution images from Mars.
It currently takes 90 minutes to transmit high-resolution images from Mars - but a new optical communications system that NASA plans to demonstrate in 2016 will cut this time to just a few minutes, and even allow the streaming of high-definition video from beyond the Moon.
The Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) is expected to fly as a hosted payload on a commercial communications satellite developed by Space Systems/Loral, of Palo Alto, California.
"We want to take NASA's communications capabilities to the next level," says LCRD principal investigator Dave Israel. "Just as the home internet user hit the wall with dial-up, NASA is approaching the limit of what its existing communications network can handle."
The idea is to augment NASA's legacy radio-based network with optical systems, which could increase data rates by anywhere from 10 to 100 times.
To demonstrate the new capability, the Goddard team will encode digital data and transmit the information via laser light from specially equipped ground stations to an experimental payload hosted on the commercial communications satellite.
The payload will include telescopes, lasers, mirrors, detectors, a pointing and tracking system, control electronics, and two different types of modem. One can communicate with deep space missions or low-power smallsats operating in low-Earth orbit; the other can handle data rates of tens of gigabits per second from Earth-orbiting spacecraft, including the International Space Station.
Once the payload receives the data, it will then relay it back to ground stations in Hawaii and Southern California.
The demonstration is expected to run two to three years.
The project isn't NASA's first foray into laser communications. Goddard engineers are working on a laser communications payload for NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), due for launch in 2013.
The goal is to prove fundamental concepts of laser-based communications and transfer up to 622 megabits per second, about five times the current best performance from lunar distances.
However, the LADEE payload, the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration (LLCD), is equipped only with the lower-speed modem best suited for deep space communications. In addition, it's expected to operate for only 16 days -not long enough to demonstrate a fully operational laser-communications network.
ANKARA (Reuters) ? The United States has agreed in principle to deploy U.S. Predator drones on Turkish soil to aid in the fight against Kurdish separatist rebels, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said.
The U.S. military flies unarmed surveillance Predators based in Iraq and shares images and vital intelligence with Turkey to aid Ankara as it battles Kurdish Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels who have camps in northern Iraq.
Erdogan, speaking to reporters in New York on Friday where he attended a U.N. General Assembly, said Turkey has offered to buy or lease the drones and that details are being worked out.
U.S. troops are due to leave Iraq at the end of 2011. Turkish officials have expressed concern the PKK, which has bases in northern Iraq, might exploit any security vacuum left by the departure of the U.S. military from Iraq.
Security experts say Turkey is very dependent on the Predators and other spy aircraft in its fight against the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
Turkey, a NATO ally for the United States, agreed earlier this month to host a NATO early-warning radar system as part of the defenses of the Western military alliance.
The Turkish military has launched air strikes and artillery raids against suspected PKK hideouts in northern Iraq in retaliation for a spate of militant attacks inside Turkey, despite opposition from Iraq's regional Kurdish government.
Erdogan said such operations will continue until the PKK lays down its weapons. Iraqi Kurdish government officials have called for the issue to be resolved through diplomatic means.
"Our decision is clear. We cannot back off, we cannot think about ending the cross-border operations," Erdogan said.
"If the terrorist organization can manage to lay down weapons, naturally the operations will also stop."
There has been an increase in rhetoric by Turkey of a potential cross-border land operation into northern Iraq, possibly in cooperation with Iran, which is locked in its own conflict with an offshoot of the PKK.
The PKK has fought for Kurdish self-rule for more than 27 years in a conflict that has killed 40,000 people.

Kitchen remodel designs today are more complex and expensive. The appearance of your kitchen can add to the value of your home or take away from it. However, this does not mean you have to spend $80,000 to create a beautiful and functional kitchen. When you live in an area that does not feature high-tech kitchens with large food preparation areas as well as expensive materials and finishes, it may not be wise to invest so much money on a kitchen remodeling design, since if you do sell your home, you may not get back your investment.
Most homes today feature an open plan design kitchen that provides good natural lighting. This way you, your family and friends can eat, drink, talk, watch television while preparing meals and enjoying the same open space. You do not have to spend an outrageous amount of money for a basic kitchen remodel design. For instance, when your cabinets are in good condition, you may consider staining or repainting them for a fresh appearance. It the cabinet boxes are in good shape, you might want to replace only the doors, the drawer fronts and hardware.
However, if the cabinets need replacing, there are many attractive, reasonably priced materials that can offer the special appearance you wish to create. Keep in mind that it can become very expensive when you remodel large rooms with custom cabinets made of exotic woods.
Your appliances should be energy efficient and of good quality. However, if you do not want to spend a lot of money, you can choose appliances that are all white, black or beige since they are both less expensive and just as attractive as stainless steel. Remember, a purchase of professional or commercial appliances of stainless steel will increase your budget total once you have determined the amount you want to spend per appliance and whether your existing appliances are reusable.
Always being mindful of your budget, you should know that hardwood flooring is more expensive than some tile or vinyl flooring. As long as you do not use such materials as stone, marble, granite, concrete and stainless steel, keep in mind that back splashes and countertops of more common materials will be cheaper. Rather than using imported or hand painted tiles which are expensive, choose the other types of budget friendly synthetic tiles that are both durable and beautiful.
Kitchen islands are wonderful sources for extra storage and preparation areas, with or without a sink, or you may consider installing a cook top. Consider what the available space will be, since a kitchen island does need a certain amount of space to be work efficient. For instance, when working with a small 3? x 6? island, you will require at least 130 square feet of floor space for the traffic flow around the island to function well, depending upon the size of the room.
No matter how simple or complex your kitchen remodeling design is, the kitchen can be useful for working on the computer, doing homework or gathering around your family and friends for eating and drinking.
Before beginning to do any work, it is a good idea to learn as much as you can about kitchen remodel design. Since the kitchen is the heart of any home and a special area, you want yours to perform its best for you now and in the future.
