Football and lacrosse powers joined an All-American basketball player and a long-time sportswriter as the award winners at the 64th annual Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association banquet Monday.

University of Delaware All-American basketball forward Elena Delle Donne earned Athlete of the Year award following a season where she led the Blue Hens to their first ever CAA Tournament championship and NCAA tournament victories, along with a No. 7 ranking. Delle Donne was named to the AP's 1st team, while also earning "Academic All-American of the Year" as well.

Middletown High School's football squad was named the organization's 2012 Team of the Year following a 12-0 campaign which included all ten regular season games by at least 35 points. The Cavaliers capped off the perfect season with a hard-fought 35-28 semifinal triumph over Caesar Rodney and then a 27-0 blanking of Salesianum for their second straight state title.

Cape Henlopen girls lacrosse's P.J. Kesmodel earned DSBA Coach of the Year honors after leading the Vikings to a 15-0 campaign including victories over fellow powers Tower Hill and St. Andrew's in the semifinals and finals of the state tournament. Kesmodel has led Cape to four straight titles after a successful coaching career in Maryland. He is the only high school lacrosse coach to win titles in different states.

The Herm Reitzes Award went to late-New Castle Weekly writer Harold Hoagland. Hoagland graduated from William Penn High School in 1945 and then spent most of the rest of his life covering sports in the New Castle area up until his passing last December. The Reitzes Award is designed to go to an individual who exhibits outstanding community service.

In addition, DSBA announced a fifth award to be presented for the first time next season, the Buddy Hurlock "unsung hero" award. The long-time News Journal high school sportswriter passed away early last year after a long battle with a brain tumor.
