Are the arts not interested in the Olympics? | Looking at arts, culture ...

Two years ago arts audiences were thoroughly sick and tired of soccer themed plays, dance works and even art exhibitions.? The South African arts community had jumped on the local 2010 World Cup bandwagon with a vengeance.

In 2012, with the Olympics being held in London, the South African arts community hasn?t even given a nod in the direction of the athletes attending this event, or the fact that for the next few days nearly every South African will be interested in hearing how many medals we (South African athletes) are collecting.

It seems that the South African arts community are not interested in the Olympics, and certainly not if they can?t readily see a buck at the end of it ? and I?m not talking about a springbuck, or even a protea.? What a bunch of mercenary creatures!?

Where are the stories of athletes who make it against all odds?? If Chariots of Fire could go on to be a blockbusting movie, then surely there is some opportunity for performing artists to tap into the sports community for new audiences?? Are our theatres so full that further audience development is not necessary?

The Olympics symbolise the striving of an athlete to be the best, not only the best he or she can be, but better than all the others.? The various disciplines which have been accepted as official Olympic games allow for a rich range of ideas.? The scope for a performing artist to be creative is unlimited.? The summer Olympics, particularly, feature sports at which South Africans both excel and which are familiar to the people who would make up the audiences.

This collective lack of interest in the Olympics is, in my opinion, a wasted opportunity to get interest and respect from an audience which would not usually cross the theatre?s threshold.

Never mind, 2016, is coming up. Perhaps this can be remedied then?

Multi-skilled, trained theologian (Christian), administrator and journalist, I conduct weddings, funerals and facilitate spiritual growth workshops. Theatre, music, dance and visual arts are my passions. I have been making my musical musings, theatre talks and dance dialogues public since February 1999 when I acquired access to the internet. Books are another passion, and I have a particular interest in South African ecology and history.
