Our New Energy Efficient Homes

July 24th, 2013

We are proud to introduce EnerGuide energy efficiency ratings as a new standard with all new homes at Predator Ridge.

Our New Energy Efficient Homes EnerguideG1The EnerGuide rating shows a standard measure of your home?s energy performance and shows you (and future buyers) exactly how energy efficient your home is.

The rating is calculated based on standard operation assumptions so that you can compare the energy performance of one house against another.

The home?s energy efficiency level is rated on a scale of 0 to 100. A rating of 0 represents a home with major air leakage, no insulation and extremely high energy consumption.

We are proud to be one of the only builders in the Okanagan including energy efficient upgrades as standard in the building of all our new homes.

What does this mean for you?

An energy efficient home is proven to be:
? less expensive to operate
? more comfortable to live in
? more environmentally friendly
? has a higher resale value

All of our new homes will be evaluated by Total Home Solutions, a Certified Independent Energy Advisor based in Kelowna and all will come complete with an EnerGuide rating label and detailed report.

We are extremely proud to offer this new standard of building at Predator Ridge. Please contact us if you would like any further details on our new EnerGuide rating.

President Obama Overturns USITC Ban on Earlier Apple iPads, iPhones

In a bit of a last-minute reprieve for Apple, the White House has officially overturned a looming ban by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) that would have prohibited sales and imports of the AT&T version of the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4, as well as the 3G-friendly iPad and iPad 2 tablets, starting Monday. The move, which was initially suggested as having little chance of happening by pundits and legal experts, represents the first veto of a USITC decision since 1987.

"After extensive consultations with the agencies of the Trade Policy Staff Committee and the Trade Policy Review Group, as well as other interested agencies and persons, I have decided to disapprove the USITC's determination to issue an exclusion order and cease and desist order in this investigation," wrote U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman today in a letter to International Trade Commission chairman Irving Williamson.

"This decision is based on my review of the various policy considerations discussed above as they relate to the effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers," he added.

Apple, responding to the news via statement, praised the decision while simultaneously taking a dig at rival Samsung. The company said that Samsung "was wrong to abuse the patent system in this way."

Samsung representatives say that the company is "disappointed" by the decision.

"The ITC's decision correctly recognized that Samsung has been negotiating in good faith and that Apple remains unwilling to take a license," said a Samsung spokesperson, as reported by Politico.

While Samsung and Apple had originally attempted to go through a licensing process in regards to Samsung's patent that the company claims Apple infringed upon, the talks between the two broke down.

Apple has alleged that Samsung demanded too high of a price for the patent ? 2.4% per chipset, per patent, across Apple's line of 3G-friendly iPhones and iPads ? and the company was unwilling to entertain what it described as an "unreasonable" cost following Samsung's agreement to license certain parts of its patent portfolio on "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms" (FRAND).

The final determination by the USITC, in part, commented that a dispute still remains as to whether the patent in question is even standards-essential ? which would mean that it falls under Samsung's previously mentioned FRAND agreement. Additionally, the USITC found that Apple did not act "in good faith" in regards to negotiations over the patent licensing.

"In other words, Samsung offered Apple FRAND licensing terms for the patent in question, but Apple simply refused to accept them," writes OSNews' Thom Holwerda.

Samsung, however, is free to continue to pursue other legal avenues for its claims. As Froman notes in his letter, today's decision "does not mean that the patent owner in this case is not entitled to a remedy."

The Time Hillary Was Right About Obama in 2008

Some people wondered why Hillary Clinton failed to inspired voters in the 2008 presidential campaign with an explicitly cynical message. Mocking then-Sen. Barack Obama, Clinton said, "I could stand up here and say: let?s just get everybody together, let?s get unified? The sky will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know that we should do the right thing, and the world would be perfect." Get real, she said. She'd lived through the 90s. "Maybe I?ve just lived a little long, but I have no illusions about how hard this will be. You are not going to wave a magic wand?" She did not win the Democratic nomination. But, Politico's Glenn Thrush points out, history has proved her right. Even Obama admits his speeches don't work like magic on House Republicans.?

Obama himself has explicitly endorsed the no-magic-wands view. "I wish I had a magic wand and could make this all happen on my own," Obama said of congressional inaction on the DREAM Act in 2011. Earlier this year, he complained, "Even though most people agree that I'm being reasonable; that most people agree I'm presenting a fair deal; the fact they don't take it means I should somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what's right."

RELATED: Bill Clinton May or May Not Have Called Obama an 'Amateur'

I told you so, Clinton adviser James Carville says. "His message was 'I can transcend Washington' ? her message was 'I can bend it, I can cut through it,'" Carville told Politico. "Guess which one turned out to be right?" ?Many commentators have urged Obama to show leadership by somehow transcending partisan politics.?The New York Times' Maureen Dowd, for example, has pointed to the leadership shown in the movie? The American President.?But she's also?suggested?Obama could learn from the Clintons' experience in the '90s. "The Clintons have emerged stronger on the back end of their scandals," Dowd said. "America?s ultimate survivors are now truly potent or dangerous, depending on how you look at it, because Americans love them Bridget Jones-style, just the way they are, warts and all."?In fact, Clinton learned so much as first lady that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid thinks she'd be able to top Bill Clinton's performance. "I think that they?re a pretty good team, but she?ll handle things probably even better than he did," Reid told?PBS.

What did Iran's Rouhani call Israel?

')
//-->

News reports out of the Middle East on Friday illustrated the dangers of misquotation, especially in the arena of foreign relations.

Just ahead of his inauguration, Iran's president-elect Hassan Rouhani was quoted by Iranian state media saying that Israel was a "wound that... needs to be removed."

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Rouhani saying, "The Zionist regime has been a wound on the body of the Islamic world for years and the wound should be removed."

The Associated Press noted, not inaccurately, that Rouhani's "remarks about Israel ? his country's arch enemy ? echoed longstanding views of other Iranian leaders."

As if to illustrate that point, Iran's outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Israel with a parting shot Friday. "I will inform you with God as my witness, a devastating storm is on the way that will uproot the basis of Zionism," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Rouhani's remarks, with a fiery, if familiar, statement:

"Rowhani's true face has been revealed earlier than expected. Even if they will now rush to deny his remarks, this is what the man thinks and this is the plan of the Iranian regime. These remarks by President Rowhani must rouse the world from the illusion that part of it has been caught up in since the Iranian elections. The president there has changed but the goal of the regime has not: To achieve nuclear weapons in order to threaten Israel, the Middle East and the peace and security of the entire world. A country that threatens the destruction of the State of Israel must not be allowed to possess weapons of mass destruction."

However, the statement Netanyahu was responding to turned out to be a misquotation.

What Rouhani actually said was (as translated by The New York Times' Thomas Erdbrink):

"The day of Quds, which is one of the mementos of the Imam [Khomeini], may he be admitted to God?s paradise, is the day that the people display the unity of the Islamic world against any form of tyranny and aggression. In any case, in our region, a sore has been sitting on the body of the Islamic world for many years, in the shadow of the occupation of the Holy Land of Palestine and the dear Quds. This day is in fact a reminder of the fact that Muslim people will not forgot their historic right and will continue to stand against aggression and tyranny."

There's no mention of a "cancerous tumor" or removal. Iranian state television, Press TV, said news agencies "distorted" Rowhani's remarks.

While it remains unclear where the mistake happened, the incident doesn't herald a good beginning for relations between Netanyahu and the moderate cleric who will be inaugurated as Iran's president on Sunday.

Here is a video of Rouhani's statement, in Farsi:
